Episode 107 - Celebrations
Segment #4 - At the Table
Activity - Woven Placemats

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 11-inch x 17-inch construction paper in various colors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue

LET'S GET STARTED:

  1. Fold sheet of construction paper in half widthwise.   Along the fold, use ruler and pencil to mark four to six evenly spaced dots.   Measure and mark corresponding dots along the opposite edge.
  2. Use scissors to cut through both layers of paper, beginning at the fold and ending within 1 inch of the opposite edge.   Vary the cuts by making zigzags or a wavy design.
  3. Cut construction paper in contrasting colors in nine or ten 12 x 1 inch strips.   Make some strips a little wider or narrower for variation.   Decorate the strips with cutouts of construction paper in contrasting colors, stickers and paint.
  4. Begin weaving the placemat by gluing one strip on the back of the placemat.   Feed it through the slits and secure in place with glue at the opposite end.     Weave strips until the placemat is completed.
  5. Set on table for a unique and colorful placemat. You may want to laminate placemat for durability.
