Episode 107 - Celebrations
Segment #2 - Cartons and Cans
Activity - Story Blocks

Save half-pint, pint and quart-size cardboard milk cartons to make storytelling blocks.

Rinse cartons with soap and water and let dry.   On each carton, bend the top flat and tape with packing tape to form a smooth side for your block.   Wrap each carton like a package, using the plain side of a brown paper bag, and try some of these ideas for decorating and playing with the boxes to roll a story.

On each side of one block, create images for each season of the year using crayons, markers, paints or cutouts from a magazine.   On another block, draw pictures for various kinds of weather (rain, snow, clouds, sun, etc.)   Decorate other blocks with photographs of family or friends, drawings or stickers of animals in different settings (on a boat, in cave, etc.).   To retell travel memories, decorate with vacation pictures and souvenirs from your trip, such as ticket stubs, small seashells, twigs and leaves.

To play, give a few blocks to each family member.   Have each person roll out his blocks like dice onto the floor.   Using the images that land face up, begin to tell the story.
