Episode 126 - Time Out for Time
Segment #2 - French Cream Puffs
Activity - French Cream Puffs

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 4 eggs slightly beaten

LET'S GET STARTED:

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. An adult can heat water and butter to a rolling boil in a saucepan.
  3. Stir in flour over low heat until the mixture is smooth and forms a ball. Place in a mixing bowl.
  4. Help your child crack the eggs, one at a time, into the bowl, then beat with an electric mixture. At first the mixture will look like scrambled eggs. Continue beating a few seconds longer until smooth.
  5. Drop the mixture by rounded tablespoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet, leaving two inches between the puffs to allow spreading.
  6. Bake 15 minutes, then reduce oven to 350 degrees and bake until the sides of the puffs feel rigid, about 30 minutes longer. Cool.
  7. Slice a cap off each puff and fill with whipped cream or pudding, replace the cap.

Tips: The dough can be piped out of a pastry bag to make eclairs or a plastic sandwich bag with cut off corner. Fill the inside with cream or pudding and top with chocolate sauce. Flavoring the whipped cream with cocoa powder makes a chocolate cream puff.
