Episode 123 - Colorful Creations
Segment #4 -Tarte Tatin
Activity - Tarte Tatin
This dessert was named for the French Tatin sisters who created this famous and delicious upside down, caramelized apple pie. They apparently forgot that the dough goes in the pan first!
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- 4 medium Golden Delicious or Granny Smith apples
- 1 cup of sugar
- Prepared piecrust dough
- 1-pint ice cream (optional)
LET'S GET STARTED:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Let kids peel, and core the apples. Cut the apples in half.
- In a 10-12-inch ovenproof skillet, cook the sugar over medium heat on the stove until caramelized.
- Place apples in skillet and continue cooking until apples are slightly tender, about 5 minutes.
- Turn the apples cut side up in the skillet and place the piecrust over the top to form a slight dome shape. Tuck the edges of the dough lightly around apples. Poke several holes in the dough with a fork.
- Place the skillet in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes until crust is golden and apples are tender. Cool slightly and turn over onto platter.
- Slice and serve with ice cream.
