Episode 117 - The Ultimate Potato Show
Segment #3 - Burlap
Activity - Burlap Tree Wall Hanging
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Wheat paste from hardware or home store
- 1/2 yard 36-inch brown burlap
- Water
- Bucket
- Newspaper
- Scissors
- Plastic drop cloth or trash bag
- Velcro dots
- Leaves
- Laminate sheets from office supply store
LET'S GET STARTED:
- Before you start, place drop cloth or trash bag down to protect work area.
- Wad small balls of newspaper. Set them onto the plastic in a rectangle shape.
- In a bucket, mix 3 or 4 boxes of wheat paste with 1 quart of water until you have a thin paste.
- Make your tree any size you want. We used a piece of burlap 18-inches wide x 36-inches long.
- Set the burlap piece in front of you so the 36-inch length lies vertically. Cut two 10-inch slits into the top edge of the burlap 6-inches in from each side. This creates 3 "branch" sections.
- Set the burlap into the wheat paste until it is fully covered.
- Place the wet burlap over the newspaper balls and mold into a tree shape. You will remove newspaper balls from some areas where they are not needed.
- Once tree has partially dried (enough to hold its shape) turn it over and remove newspaper balls. Some bits of paper will stick to the burlap - that's ok.
- Dry completely.
- Display burlap tree sculpture on wall or door. Gather leaves from local trees, cover them in laminate sheets and cut out along edges. Place a Velcro dot on the tree and the corresponding dot on the back of the leaf and attach to burlap tree. Label leaves to identify them. Decorate for the 4 seasons: fall leaf colors in autumn; green leaves and pressed flowers in the spring and summer. Add snowflakes in the winter.
